Did you know that the average age of a pet cat is about 13 to 17 years? However, it’s not uncommon for our feline pals to live much longer than that. With good care, Fluffy may live to be well over 20! As your kitty ages, you’ll start to see some gradual changes. She’ll also benefit from some extra TLC. An Auburn Hills, MI vet discusses senior cat care below.

Comfy Beds

Senior cats are absolute masters at napping, and can snooze up to 20 hours a day. Make sure Fluffy has lots of comfy spots to choose from. For bonus purrs, offer her a cozy window seat with a good view.

Playing is great for your feline buddy, both mentally and physically. Let Fluffy unleash her inner kitten sometimes! Even a few minutes of pouncing and jumping will be beneficial.

Keep Kitty In

We recommend that all kitties stay indoors. This goes double for senior cats! Fluffy won’t be as alert or nimble as she once was, so she’s at increased risk from hazards like traffic and predators. She’s also more likely to get lost.

Just like people, cats sometimes develop vision problems as they age. Keep nightlights on after dark for your furry friend.

Senior cats sometimes have trouble using litterboxes with high sides. Get Fluffy one that’s a little easier for her to get in and out of. If you have more than one story in your home, keep litterboxes on every level, so your pet doesn’t have to use the stairs as much.

Pet Ramps

Your cat may have a hard time climbing or jumping to her favorite napping spots. Set out some pet ramps for her. Or, just arrange a footstool, storage bench, or ottoman for her to jump from.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy will benefit from more frequent appointments as she ages. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between visits, keep an eye out for signs of illness. Call us right away if you notice anything amiss.

Purrs And Cuddles

Many kitties get super cuddly in their golden years. If Fluffy wants to snuggle, by all means indulge her. Just be very gentle when you pick her up or put her down.
